WDS Reception & Panel Discussion at Maui Derm
On January 29, 2018, on behalf of the Women’s Dermatologic Society, Dr. Lenore Kakita, Past President; Dr. Mary Maloney, Current President; and Dr. Julia Baltz, Resident Representative were asked to facilitate a discussion at the 14th Annual Maui Derm Meeting entitled, “The Future of Dermatology or its Demise.” Included on the panel were Dr. Barbara Gilchrest of Harvard Medical School, Dr. James Leyden of the University of Pennsylvania, Victor Bulto Vice President of Novartis Immunology and Dermatology, and Robert Bitterman, Sr. CEO of Cutanea Life Sciences. What ensued was a lively discussion of technology in Dermatology, patient access to a growing arsenal of medications, and the resultant rise in healthcare costs.
Dr. Maloney started the evening by inviting panelists to give their opinion on patients’ increased access to their healthcare record. Mr. Bulto of Novartis was quick to point out that there is an at times discordant balance of power between the various stakeholders of health, including the patient, the provider, and the payer, but that ultimately increasing patient engagement leads to better patient outcomes. Similarly Dr. Gilchrest and Dr. Baltz agreed that increased patient engagement is inevitable and it behooves providers to educate their patients on the ways in which to use this technology to effect positive change on both the micro level of individual patient care and on a macro level in developing systems based models that integrate technology.
When discussing the Electronic Medical Record panelists readily admitted to frustration with a disruption of meaningful patient-provider interactions and the immense amount of after-hours work that falls on the physician. Despite these frustrations, panelists agreed that in time the EMR could provide useful information for medical innovation through the collection of Big Data.
Similarly the group felt that teledermatology and increased access to diagnostic technology are additional high impact inevitabilities in our specialty. Drs. Leyden, Gilchrest, and Maloney cited increasing evidence on the ways in which technology can improve access to care and diagnostic accuracy.
Specialty pharmacies and the high cost of biologic medications were topics of particular interest and concern to panelists and audience members alike. Mr. Bitterman provided an excellent overview of the reasons that a pharmaceutical company may choose to contract with specialty pharmacies preferentially over chain drugstores. Notably, specialty pharmacies allow for agreed upon pricing of medications, thus standardizing the reimbursement to the company and the amount paid by a patient. In contrast, chain drug stores have a greater ability to substitute the prescribed drug with a generic or therapeutic equivalent in order to maximize profitability. Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBM) are instrumental in setting the formulary for various healthcare plans. PBMs are incentivized to put more expensive medications on formulary, as this leads to higher percentage based rebates from drug manufactures to PBMs. The group concluded on the need for better transparency at every level of the drug delivery system.
In answer to the closing question on medication pricing, Mr. Bulto and Mr. Bitterman elucidated to the group the ways in which drug prices are decided. The multifactorial metrics of drug pricing include societal value of a drug, geographic variations on cost of living and access, as well as the investment of research and development in the setting of an increasingly saturated market.
The panel discussion as led by Drs. Kakita, Maloney, and Baltz allowed for a spirited debate between clinical and research physicians and our partners in the pharmaceutical industry. It is safe to say that a greater level of understanding was reached on both sides as to the intricacies of providing care in a rapidly changing medical landscape, and the evening radiated a spirit of optimism as to the future of Dermatology.

On Thursday night, Dr. Terry Cronin and his niece, and fellow dermatologist, Dr. Megan Cronin led a lively panel discussion on how to deal with sexism, and ageism, for the young dermatologist. The panel consisted of Dr. Laurin Council, Dr. Shawna Flanagan, and Dr. Shadi Kourosh. All had great stories and recommendations for dealing with those that do not treat the female doctor as an expert. Many of the suggestions dealt with humor! “I don’t care what you call me, as long as you do not call your lawyer.” There were also suggestions on how to enlist the staff around you to assist you. They can support your authority by calling you doctor and helping to correct patients. The audience also had great stories on how they have dealt with sexism during their education and at their practices

WDS Resident Education Event Recap – Test Yourself Dermatopathology Unknowns
Emily Chu, MD, PhD provided an outstanding review of dermatopathology on May 28, 2020. Dr. Chu is a Dermatologist and Dermatopathologist at the University of Pennsylvania. Her clinical and research interests are melanoma and pigmented lesions, cutaneous reactions to targeted and immunotherapies, and cancer associated genodermatoses.
Due to the current COVID pandemic, and the impact this has had on dermatology education, Dr. Chu put together an hour-long dermatopathology review filled with educational pearls and wisdom. This lecture was aimed for residents but, would be useful for all practicing dermatologists with an interest in reviewing dermatopathology.
Throughout the presentation Dr. Chu reviewed eight cases and explained, in detail, the incorrect choices as well. The diagnoses discussed ranged from benign to malignant and included items such as myofibroma, tufted angioma, linear IgA disease, trichodiscoma, spitz nevus, mucinous carcinoma, metastatic breast cancer and sebaceous adenoma. Additionally, Dr. Chu reviewed clinical images for clinicopathologic correlation.
Just a few of the helpful points discussed included:
- +SMA staining of myofibromas as a result of myopericytic origin
- +CD31 staining of endothelial cells and +D2-40 staining of semilunar vessels in tufted angiomas
- Linear IgA, compared to DH, is associated with a greater likelihood of uniform neutrophil infiltration along the entire DEJ
- Multiple trichodiscomas are frequently associated with Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome
- Epithelioid blue nevi are seen in Carney complex
- Sebaceous adenomas may be more common on the trunk in Muir-Torre syndrome
Dr. Chu’s lecture was extremely informative and serves as a great resource for residents preparing to take the ABD board examination.

As we are confronted with getting used to this “new normal,” it was wonderful to hear one another’s experiences and realize that many of the same sentiments are shared among the group. We face challenges with balancing teledermatology and child care, but on a positive note it is nice to have free time to work on both new and long overdue projects.
Ideas for making the most of free time:
- Adopt a foster dog!
- Cooking
- TV shows – Schitt’s Creek was a crowd favorite!
- Research projects
Tips for practice from around the country:
- Using various platforms including Doximity, doxy.me, and Epic
- Zoom virtual waiting room available via Epic
- Asking patients to send photos of concerning lesions prior to the televisit or video call
- Consolidating emergent cases to be seen in person 1-2 times per week
- Preoperative COVID-19 antibody testing prior to Mohs surgery
- Teaching patients how to take high-quality photos: https://www.dermpics.com/home
Many find humor to be helpful in easing anxiety. Trading memes and jokes with friends is good medicine! Here are a few that were shared:
- “Day 3 of quarantine and already tired of babysitting my mom’s grandkids.”
- “Any introverts check in on your extrovert friends. They are not ok. They have no idea how this works.”
- “We are all Schrodinger’s virus now. As we cannot get tested, we don’t know if we have the virus or not. We have to act as if we have the virus so we don’t spread it to others. We have to act as if we’ve never had the virus because if we haven’t had it, we’re not immune. Therefore, we both have and don’t have the virus. Thus, Schrodinger’s virus.”
We are proud of our specialty! Our expertise as dermatologists. can help keep patients out of the emergency room. We have an important role to play going forward. Dermatologic manifestations of COVID-19 were reviewed, and we encourage sharing these via the AAD COVID registry. https://redcap.partners.org/redcap/surveys/index.php?s=YJWAJCX7TY
Thank you to everyone who participated! It is uplifting to gather with colleagues around the country and virtually meet like-minded people in our field. Despite being isolated and apart, these virtual events give us an opportunity to feel closer together.

WDS Resident Education Series - Board Review - Surgical/Procedural Dermatology
WDS Resident Education Event Recap
The WDS continues to provide fantastic high yield reviews for residents including a Surgical/Procedural Dermatology lecture presented on Thursday, May 14th, 2020 by Jennifer Lucas, MD, FAAD, FACMS. Dr. Lucas is the Vice President of the Women’s Dermatologic Society and has been a dedicated member for several years serving in various roles. She is a Mohs surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic, and participates in the education of both residents and fellows. She has received the teacher of the year award several times.
Dr. Lucas gave an in-depth boards style overview of surgical and procedural dermatology. In her review she covers everything from when/where/why a certain type of suture technique would be used, flaps/grafts, biopsy tips for nails, head and neck innervation, surgical complications and many other important surgical and procedural considerations.
Dr. Lucas includes many procedural tips along with boards applicable review points. Her lecture provided numerous images and illustrations to demonstrate each topic. I highly recommend all levels of dermatology residents watch this review (especially those of us studying for boards) and take notes because this information is crucial and will only make you a better dermatology resident and future dermatologist.
Following the live event, the session will be available on the WDS Members Only Website.
Registration and a list of future Resident Education events can be found at https://www.womensderm.org/events/upcoming-events.

Diversity Committee Virtual Networking
Diversity Committee Virtual Networking Event Recap
Another successful virtual WDS networking event took place Wednesday, April 15, hosted by Drs. Alison Ehlrich and Mona Gohara. A group of residents, medical students, academic and private practice dermatologists from across the country joined together via Zoom to discuss the situation in their areas, changes in their daily lives, and to offer words of encouragement. Many participants shared meaningful quotations, poems, and stories. Pearls from the conversation included:
Words of Inspiration:
- Dr. Alison Ehrlich recommends a book of poems called A Modern Book of Hours. She reflected on 2 quotations in particular:
- “There is in us something wiser than our head.” - Arthur Schopenhauer (1851)
- “The years teach much which the days never know.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson (1844)
- The group also reflected on the following quotes/poems:
- "There are some things you learn best in calm, and some in storm.” - Willa Cather
- “Be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.”
- The poem “The Dash” by Linda Ellis: What is important in life is “how we spend our dash”.
- “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” - Albert Einstein
- “Grief can take care of itself, but to get the full value of joy you must have somebody to divide it with.” – Mark Twain
- “Everything is in a state of metamorphosis.”
- “When you can’t control what’s happening, control how you respond to what’s happening.”
- Pablo Neruda’s Sonnet 17
Reflecting on the Positive
- We have the opportunity to help patients, whether that be on the front lines or in our offices by helping to keep patients out of the ERs and Urgent Cares.
- Cherish the time to slow down and the extra time with your family- especially when doing things we were “too busy” to do before.
- People are connecting in new and meaningful ways: virtually and in the community/neighborhood.
- Dermatologists have come together in new ways to support each other as we all navigate the situation (medically, personally, and financially) together.
Advice for Surviving the Current Situation:
- Dr. Mona Gohara recommends the 20/20 rule: Each day, get 20 minutes of exercise and listen to 20 minutes of music at night that takes you to memorable times in your life.
- Advice for telemedicine: Remember that patients are often very grateful for this service. On a logistical note, try to space patients out to account for extra time with technical difficulties.
- Keep a journal- we are living through history.
- Get involved! There are many opportunities for virtual networking and education to take advantage of during this time. There are WDS educational sessions for residents each week and more remote networking opportunities. Registration and a list of events can be found at https://www.womensderm.org/events/upcoming-events. WDS Committee applications will be open through October, and more information can be found here: https://www.womensderm.org/forms/committee-interest-form.php.

Networking Breakfast at the ASDS Annual Meeting
The Women’s Dermatologic Society held a Networking Breakfast and Panel Discussion on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. The breakfast was well attended by WDS Members and ASDS Meeting Attendees. The breakfast offered an opportunity to network, hear some of Dr. Doris Day’s tips to Avoid Burnout and engage in a panel discussion.
Current President Pearl Grimes, MD welcomed the group and introduced Doris Day, MD who addressed attendees on ways to Avoid Burnout. After her talk, panelist Jonith Breadon, MD (Program Committee Member), Pearl Grimes, MD (WDS President), and Deirdre Hooper, MD (Legacy Council Chair) joined Dr. Day for an engaging discussion. The panelists discussed topics in residency and training opportunities, provided advice for early career dermatologist, and ways the WDS can help you. The panel was engaged with the audience taking questions and creating an open forum discussion.
The WDS Residents, Fellows & Young Physicians Committee sponsored resident tickets for the luncheon, allowing 25 WDS Resident Members attend this networking event.

Women's Dermatology Leadership Meeting
Dermatologists and industry representatives gathered on April 28, 2018 in Toronto, Canada for the Inaugural Women in Dermatology Leadership Meeting. Inspired by the annual WDS January retreat, the meeting offered a full day of networking and education, with an emphasis on the development of leadership skills. Although the room was mainly full of women, nearly a dozen men joined the event, either as panelists or attendees.
The morning kicked off with a welcome message from Dr. Julie Powell, President of the Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA). Setting the stage for the day, she gave an overview of the realities of women in leadership positions across Canada. Dr. Powell then turned the floor over to Dr. Pearl Grimes, WDS President, for her talk on building leadership. Grimes pointed out that great leaders, including Martin Luther King, Oprah, and Mahatma Gandhi, have three common attributes: passion, belief, and the ability to move others. The critical takeaway from Grimes’ discussion was leaders genuinely engage others at a personal level to make others feel like part of the group.
The event continued with communication specialist Marsheila DeVan's presenting on Communicating with Impact. Feeling empowered to take on the world attendees then were ready to discuss how to handle situations that life throws at us – from natural disasters to security incidents, Dr. Grimes and Dr. Rendon provided respective experience of planning for large-scale natural events, and having a crisis management plan in place.
Rounding out the event, panel discussion began on industry and physicians, and then on to world perspectives on women in leadership, as viewed by men. The day ended with a communications workshop lead by Marsheila DeVan, focusing on presentation skills and working the room.
Thank you to WDS & CDA member Dr. Alfsaneh Alavi for taking the lead on such an incredible event!
Networking Reception during the CDA Annual Conference
The WDS held a reception at the 94th Annual Conference of the Canadian Dermatology Association on Friday, June 22, 2018 in the historic area of Montréal, Canada. Attended by 85 conference delegates, the evening offered an inspirational presentation from Quebec lawyer and mediator Sophie Bérubé. Titled Drop your weapons and enjoy being creative in every aspect of your life, Ms. Bérubé spoke of the insights she gained after a personal loss that led her to find happiness in an everyday chaotic life.
WDS Session at Spring Continental Congress of Dermatology
During the 2018 Spring Continental Congress of the Iranian Dermatologic Society held at the International Congress Centre in Tehran this past April, Prof Alireza Firooz, President of the Congress, allowed the WDS to host a symposium on women’s dermatology. Prof Dedee Murrell, Chair of the International Sections of WDS, was invited to Co-Chair the Symposium with Dr. Luitgard Wiest of Germany, Prof Maryam Daneshpahzooh of Tehran and Prof Simin Meymandi of Iran; all WDS members.
On Thursday, April 26, 2018, roughly 200 delegates packed the Attar room D during the 2.5 hour session. Dedee Murrell opened the symposium with a presentation on the history of the WDS, followed by Simin Meymandi, talking about leishmaniasis in Iran. This was followed by a most popular and entertaining talk by Pegah Ceric-Dehdari of Dubai on optimizing fillers for women. Changing tack to the more serious topic of managing pemphigus during pregnancy was Prof Maryam Daneshpahzooh of Tehran University of Medical Sciences and Razi Hospital.
WDS stalwart Martin Kassir gave an eloquent speech on how men could support the WDS, citing as examples the inspiration he thought Drs. Wiest, Murrell and Mansouri each brought to the younger prospective members from their careers and interests. Maryam Giasi spoke on psoriasis during pregnancy, followed by Parvin Mansouri on how to get rid of dark circles under the eyes.
Luitgard Wiest closed the session, which was very interactive, by inviting prospective members to join the speakers for lunch. Roughly 60 guests attended the luncheon in a VIP area of the congress centre, kindly provided by the congress by arrangement of Prof Alireza Firooz, where a lot of interaction took place.
In 2020 there will be another opportunity for the WDS to exchange with the Iranian society. Meanwhile, many who attended have joined the WDS as international members!

Dr. Lucia Diaz, Pediatric Dermatologist at Dell Medical School UT Austin, and Dr. Heidi Prather, Cosmetic and Laser Dermatologist at Westlake Dermatology, co-hosted the inaugural WDS Regional Networking Event in Austin, TX on Thursday April 26, 2018. This event was sponsored by Pfizer to support the Women’s Dermatologic Society and promote local networking within the community. Guest speakers included Rodan Luo, JD, Innovation Consultant and Associate Director of Business Transformation at R/GA, and Makenzi Hogan, Founder of East Seventy Second Marketing and Consultation.
Drs. Heidi Prather and Lucia Diaz led a panel with our guest speakers to discuss the influence of social media on patient access to medical advice and how this is impacting the field of dermatology in the private and academic setting. The current culture of social media allows non-experts to be a convenient and readily available source for medical information, thus changing who patients ‘choose’ to be the best source of knowledge. Ongoing innovations within healthcare, such as teledermatology, to redesign the patient experience will continue to define board certified dermatologists as the expert source for information about skin and skin disease. Topics of conversation included a push for board certified dermatologists to embrace this new wave of information consumerism by using social media for patient education and consumer information.

On September 17th, Dr. Kimberly Butterwick, hosted WDS Members of the San Diego dermatology community gathered for a lovely dinner at Truluck's Restaurant. Holding true to the WDS commitment to networking, the event was all about connecting with each other. We enjoyed the pleasant weather outside for socializing and went indoors for our informal program. What I have found to be successful in really getting to know each other, is for each person in the room to share a 3 minute pearl about anything they have found useful, whether in a dermatology practice or in life in general. Pearls shared ranged from examining the scalp with a dermatoscope for those with hair loss problems, to an app called "Photomath" in which you take a photo of your math problem and it will calculate the answer for you. Oh and don't forget to get the Grail water bottle from REI. It will filter and purify water from any source or stream. We all enjoyed the comradery and picked up some helpful tips!

Regional Educational Series - Miami, FL
On Thursday, October 25, 2018 Dr. Jackie Dosal hosted a successful Networking Event in Miami, FL. Attendees spent time networking with each other and meeting new faces. After a brief happy hour, speakers and attendees talked about how the WDS has helped them in their career, whether it be mentorship or volunteer experiences. Our Expert Panelists, Jackie Dosal, MD (Cosmeceuticals, Integrative Dermatology), Alysa Herman, MD (Mohs, Dermatologic Surgery), Jonette Keri, MD (Acne, Rosacea), Andrea Maderal, MD (Autoimmune Disorders), Anna Nichols, MD, PhD (Medical Dermatology, Research), Janelle Vega, MD (Social Media & Cosmetics) highlighted a few practical tips for attendees to take home to their patients. Below are some of the take-away points.
Pearls included:
- Work/life balance – that it’s OK to say “no” once in a while. Time is our most precious resource, and under the most demand, so use it to do the things that you love.
- A commercially available niacinamide/zinc tablet can be as effective as antibiotics for acne.
- Topical OTC creams containing feverfew can be used to tame a sunburn.
- A written handout with specific instructions and after-hours contact access is the most important aspect of care for dermatologic surgery patients.
- Isotretinoin dosing of >220 mg/kg can prevent relapse.
- Testosterone and doxycycline can interact, and new guidelines recommend checking LFTs every 2 months for concurrent use. This is especially important for transitioning female to male transgender patients.
- Oral antibiotics plus probiotics are better than either alone.
- New hydroxychloroquine guidelines recommend dosing of no more than 5 mg/kg actual body weight, with eye exam at baseline and every 5 years.
- Heliocare is a good adjunctive form of photoprotection in photosensitive disorders.
- The HPV vaccine is currently being studied as treatment for inoperable SCCs – both as systemic vaccination and intralesional injection. Many questions still remain.
- Oral niacinamide is recommended at 500 mg BID dosing for prevention of non-melanoma skin cancers in high risk patients.
- Set clear expectations with cosmetic patients, and further understand both their budget and their vision. Sometimes their description of what they want is different than what they perceive in their mind.
- Forty-two percent of Americans search for health-related information on social media platforms, and forty-five percent of consumers report that social media health information influences their decision to seek care. Only a small percentage of the information in social media is from board-certified dermatologists, with a resulting flood of misinformation coming from non-qualified “influencers.” We, as dermatologists, should be contributing to the conversation to make sure accurate information is available when patients research dermatology.
The panel’s pearls generated a great discussion and follow up questions from the audience. Overall, the night consisted of great socializing, conversation, and comradery!

Can Private Dermatology Practice Survive?
Private Equity, Burnout and Diminishing Revenues
Courtney Blair Rubin MD, MBE
On January 26, 2020, the Women’s Dermatologic Society (WDS) facilitated a panel discussion at the 16th Annual Maui Derm Conference entitled “Can Private Dermatology Practice Survive: Private Equity, Burnout and Diminishing Revenues.” Past President, Dr. Lenore Kakita, Current President Dr. Barbara Mathes, and Resident Representative Dr. Courtney Rubin moderated the event with panelists Dr. Mitchel Goldman, California Medical Director of West Dermatology, Chris Kane, CEO of West Dermatology, Dr. Mark Kaufmann, CMO of The Dermatology Group, and Dr. Betsy Wernli, President of Forefront Dermatology. The event was made possible with the support of Dr. George Martin, the founder and program chairman of Maui Derm, along with Nutrafol. A lively discussion ensued with insightful dialogues on the implications of private equity’s presence in dermatology, maintaining autonomy as a provider, and preventing provider burnout.
Dr. Mathes started the evening by asking the panelists about the pros and cons of practicing dermatology as part of a private equity backed group. Dr. Goldman discussed that after 30 years as the owner of his dermatology practice in La Jolla, California, he chose to join West Dermatology because he felt that the organization allowed him to spend less time working on human resources issues, billing and coding, quality control, HIPAA compliance, and other administrative issues. By “outsourcing” the mundane tasks associated with running a practice to the private equity group, he feels more able to focus on what he loves, which is seeing patients. Dr. Wernli noted that many of the physicians within Forefront Dermatology are concerned about threats to the specialty, which include restrictions and administrative requirements that take them away from caring for their patients and lead to high levels of burnout. She explained that the ethos of Forefront Dermatology is to bring together a group of physician partners and leverage their numbers to ensure favorable contract negotiations and reimbursements, so the physicians can shift their focus back to patient care. Dr. Kaufman agreed that diminishing revenues are a major contributing factor to burnout, and mentioned that he often advises residents to seek jobs where they expend the majority of their efforts caring for patients, rather than on burdensome administrative tasks. Finally, Mr. Kane touched on some of the potential cons of working within private equity, including a focus on financial performance, loss of autonomy, and an us/them dynamic between providers who see patients and “business people” who concentrate on the practice financials. The panelists agreed that one of the major benefits of working within a private equity managed practice is optimization of clinicians’ time toward direct patient care and less energy expended on administrative tasks.
Next, the panelists discussed strategies to ensure physicians maintain control over the patient encounter. Dr. Wernli advised listeners to avoid lumping all private equity backed practices together: just as there are many types of providers with different practice and teaching styles, different private equity backed practices have different organizational structures, leadership ethos and values, which may lead to more or less autonomy for providers who practice within each private equity context. She suggested that the way to assess physician autonomy at each practice is to query physicians who are part of that group. To close, Dr. Goldman mentioned that if a practice can find a way to successfully integrate with private equity and ensure that their providers do not lose their clinically autonomy, the result often is that many of the providers are happier with increased financial compensation and fewer administrative duties.
While all of the panelists represented successful private equity backed dermatology practices, they also discussed that there are some private equity backed practices which have not been successful, likely those that do not prioritize physician retention, those that do not have compliance officers to ensure their clinicians are practicing ethically or within CMS standards, or those that are not focused on building successful long term businesses that will be stable and viable for decades. All panelists emphasized that within a practice, advanced practice clinicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners should work closely with board certified dermatologists rather than practicing with minimal supervision.
When specifically asked why the rates of job satisfaction among dermatologists have dropped precipitously over the last 10 years, all panelists agreed that a major contributing factor is compliance standards which, while ensuring quality of care, lead to an overwhelming administrative burden for providers and take away from time spent with patients. While electronic health records have become the gold standard for documentation, panelists lamented that clinicians now spend most of their days in front of a computer screen rather than in front of patients, which likely leads to decreased satisfaction. In order to prevent physician burnout within their own practices, panelists mentioned implementing yearly retreats, encouraging physicians to pursue their individual passions and aim for new goals, ensuring autonomy for physicians in their practices, and focusing physician efforts on patient care rather than paperwork. Panelists also discussed positive changes they had made to their own practices within the last year, which included: a unifying electronic health record across all offices, the addition of scribes that allowed physicians to avoid all electronics during their patient encounters, sharing monthly patient satisfaction surveys with provider teams, increased medical assistant staffing, advertising efforts to increase new patient visits, increasing visibility of physicians online, and diagnosis-specific information kits for patients.
In conclusion, the panel discussion moderated by Drs. Kakita, Mathes and Rubin led to an animated discussion on private equity in dermatology, contributing factors and strategies to mitigate physician burnout, and provider autonomy with audience comments and challenges. Ending on an optimistic note, the panelists agreed that one thing that will not change in the future is the need for dermatologic care, and that there is plenty of room within our specialty for every model of practice to exist.

WDS Mentorship Committee Virtual Networking
WDS Mentorship Committee Virtual Networking Recap
The Mentorship Committee held a Virtual Networking call hosted by Dr. Kari Martin on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 covering the topic "Mentoring Women in Medicine: Mentoring from a distance, maintaining mentoring relationships through crisis." The call was an exciting packed hour of mentor-mentee tips and ideas for future innovative ways to pursue mentorship during COVID. Attendees from all across the country were noted and included medical students, residents, academic and private practice dermatologists. Many of the attendees had attended the WDS Forum in the past and were excited to reconnect.
We discussed that with these new circumstances, we may need to work on finding new mentors or reaching out to past mentors for support, guidance or even a “shoulder to cry on.” We also reviewed the importance of understanding that the mentor mentee relationship is a two way street, meaning that each member of the relationship shares ideas for growth.
Tips for mentorship via electronic means included:
- Keep a list of those you are connecting with on electronic video platforms in a spreadsheet with notes. These could be helpful in the future when meeting again via zoom or meeting in person.
- Make sure to update your screen name when on a zoom meeting so others can identify you.
- Take notes during meetings where you could find a mentor. Consider looking into their interests and seeing if those are a fit.
- Mentors do not always have to be in the same area of interest.
- Realize remote mentorship may be positive in that a longer term relationship can be developed when the mentor and mentee live a significant distance from one another
Residents, Fellows, and Young Physicians Committee Virtual Networking
WDS Resident, Fellow, Young Physician Committee Virtual Networking Event Recap
The WDS had a great turnout for another fantastic virtual networking event on Monday April 27, 2020 hosted by Dr Julia Baltz. There were so many useful pearls and tips on Finding a Niche and Building a Specialty Clinic. Some highlights are below:
- Look for people’s work you admire that you can then take and try to emulate moving forward in your own practice.
- Introduce yourself to people at a meeting that you admire.
- Say yes more often than you say no while also being compassionate to limits of your own time.
- Realize that what you enjoy as a resident may be different when you are an attending.
- Don’t be worried about “disappointing” your mentor.
- You don’t become an expert overnight. It is somewhat of a continual process. You may change how you do things over 5-10 years.
- While it’s great to address having a niche, it’s also fine to address general dermatology without having a specialty.
- Reach out for mentorship--it doesn’t always come to you.
- A niche doesn’t have to just be in a specific disease, it can also be in something like legislature or medical education. Think outside of the box.
- You are never done learning, growing or expanding your network.
Thanks to all who participated. We are looking forward to our next virtual event!
Regional Networking Committee Virtual Networking
Regional Networking Committee Virtual Networking Event Recap
On Thursday, April 23, 2020 the Regional Networking Committee held a virtual event on the topic "How to Stay Grounded when the Ground is Shifting" hosted by Dr. Emily Keimig.
In light of recent events, we all are being faced with new challenges daily. It’s important to take time to acknowledge what’s going on now- life is changing. We need to give ourselves time to adjust.
Life will be different in the future, but don’t forget life before.
We all have different emotions, it’s important to acknowledge your feelings and what you’re going through now. Make sure you take care of yourself. Self-care is very important during this time. Do things that make you happy like reading a book, listening to a podcast, meditating, and exercising. This may include giving yourself a break from technology. Also don’t neglect your personal relationships, simple things like taking a walk with your spouse can help you reconnect. If you have kids, there are options to do things as a family like doing a family exercise class.
In addition to personal challenges, we all are facing professional challenges. This includes doing things remotely like seeing patients via teledermatology. Most of us are finding that every visit takes longer, and we are lacking face to face contact and connection. Other hurdles include having new co-workers like kids, pets and spouses which can be distracting and noisy!
Many of us also miss comradery in clinic, teaching residents/trainees and find that we appreciate our support staff and what they do during this time where we may be forced to do some of the tasks they do for us like medication reconciliation. So how can we stay connected to our staff & work family? There are many ways to do this including through social media, including them in patient care situations with televisits.
The common themes are that we all have struggles but are adapting. We are here for each other & can rely on others for support, especially in the WDS.

WDS Resident Education Series - Adventures in Tropics: Tips & Tricks from a Dermatologist's Case Log
WDS Resident Education Event Recap
The WDS presented another wonderful Zoom meeting on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 entitled: Adventures in the Tropics. Dr. Jennifer Abrahams gave an excellent overview of the global burden of skin disease including her own pearls from experiences working domestically and abroad. Dr. Abrahams is in academic practice at the University of Nebraska. She holds a diploma from the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygeine and is a member of the WDS.
Dr. Abrahams presented fascinating cases from her own clinic to review epidemiology, clinical presentation, pathophysiology, work up, and treatment of both common and rare tropical diseases with cutaneous manifestations. She reviewed cases of travelers, patients immigrating to the United States, and cases from clinics abroad. Her comprehensive presentation included diverse forms of leprosy, cutaneous larva migrans, furuncular myiasis, actinomycetoma, eumycetoma, chromoblastomycosis, mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, balamuthia mandrillaris, cryptococcal cellulitis, and scrofuloderma (including lichen scrofulasorum). Many of these infectious cases had been previously misdiagnosed as inflammatory conditions such as lupus or psoriasis, and Dr. Abrahams highlighted key findings to address delays in diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Abrahams highlighted bedside diagnositc tools, such as KOH scraping for fungal elements, and grain identification from mycetoma. She emphasized the importance of knowing classic endemic tropical diseases such as leishmaniasis and tuberculosis in Peru or leprosy in south central Texas. Dr. Abrahams reviewed different clinical presentations of tropical infections based upon differences in the host immune response for leprosy and leishmaniasis that are frequently tested in dermatology board exams.
Her presentation included high quality kodachromes and videos from her own clinic. She reviewed key histopathological findings of tropical fungal infections, such as medlar bodies/copper pennies in chromoblastomycosis, and other helpful stains for highlighting infectious organisms at the microscope.
Dr. Abrahams concluded her presentation by highlighting opportunities for dermatologists to become active participants in tropical medicine. She introduced GLODERM (International Alliance for Global Health Dermatology), which holds an annual meeting prior to the AAD. She endorsed resident opportunities for experiences in global health including the Diploma from the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygeine, the Gorgas Course in Tropical Medicine (Peru), the AAD International Resident Grant (Botswana, South African, Nepal and Lima), and participation in the National Hansens Disease Program rotation (Baton Rouge, Louisiana).
Dr. Abrahams’ presentation was extremely well organized and informative both for the seasoned dermatologist and the dermatologist in training. Following the live event, the session will be available on the WDS Members Only Website.

WDS Resident Education Series - Recap
Event Details: Thursday, June 18 - 5:30pm ET | 4:30pm CT | 2:30pm PT
Topic: Allergic Contact Dermatitis Pearls
Hosted by: Kari Martin, MD
Leave it up to the WDS to present another amazing & informative lecture! On Thursday, June 18, 2020, Dr. Kari Martin presented her “pearls” on allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Dr. Martin is a board certified dermatologist and completed a pediatric dermatology fellowship. She serves as the Residency Program Director at the University of Missouri. She is involved in clinical trials and research studies looking at many different areas in pediatric dermatology including allergic contact dermatitis.
Dr. Martin reviewed the basics of ACD, reminding us that patients must have a prior sensitization through contact with the skin. ACD is a cell-mediated Type IV- delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction. Dr. Martin reviewed the appropriate questions to ask patients, key clinical exam findings, and when to consider patch testing for our patients.
Of note, Dr. Martin mentioned that residents have a free membership to the American Contact Dermatitis Society which gives access to the Contact Allergen Management Program (CAMP). CAMP allows you to create a patient ID & build a list of products that are safe to use given their allergens.
Dr. Martin’s presentation was inclusive and concise. She has a clear passion for ACD and thoroughly enjoys teaching residents! Following the live event, the session will be available on the WDS Members Only Website.

The 9th annual Legacy Celebration took place virtually on April 29, 2021. The event kicked off at 7:30pm CT with a networking reception for VIP Supporters and Industry Sponsors. Dr. Gohara – Chair of the Legacy Committee – called on many attendees to speak about Dr. McBurney, and how she influenced them.
At 8:00pm CT, Fernando Pullam and the Performing Arts Band marched onto the stage to really get the party started. Dr. Pearl Grimes was the MC for the evening and she welcomed all to the event and thanked our industry Sponsors and VIP Supporters. She then spoke on the importance of the Legacy Celebration and Fund. Next, there were speeches from some of Dr. McBurney’s friends and colleagues. Dr. Wilma Bergfeld kicked things off and presented Dr. McBurney with her Legacy Book. Then both Dr. Mary Maloney and Dr. Suzanne Olbricht expressed their gratitude to Dr. McBurney. We were then treated to a serenade from Dr. Hal Brody. This was followed by expressions of gratitude from by Dr. Jean Bolognia, Vince Deleo, Dr. Molly Hinshaw, and Dr. Barb Mathes. Dr. Grimes then danced to the Fernando Pullam Band performing a traditional New Orleans style second line as the participants donned their mardi gras masks and images of Dr. McBurney! After the band played, there were a few more tributes to Dr. McBurney.
The event concluded with Dr. McBurney taking a moment to express her gratitude for the honor and to let the attendees know how much she appreciated the WDS and all of those that participated in the Legacy Celebration.
