What an engaging and inspiring WDS luncheon we had in San Francisco. I left refreshed and excited about the upcoming year.
Dr. Peggy Crawford and Dr. Patricia Engasser orchestrated an unforgettable event. Their careful planning and coordination was evident in every detail from the Guatemalan table favors to the incredible visual production and staging support by Connetics.
Their chosen speaker, author and activist Paola Gianturco, was warmly received and embodied the spirit of the WDSreaching out and celebrating women. The audience was spellbound by her tales of Third World women and entrepreneurship. All of her books were sold out in minutes.
Another highlight of the luncheon was the presentation of the 2006 Rose Hirschler Award to Dr. Lenore Kakita. She has been a true creator and supporter of the WDS success through active membership. She is an inspiration to us all. It was wonderful to see her family at the luncheon too --especially her 3-month old granddaughter, Kaiya Elle Kakita
We said farewell to our outgoing president, Dr. Jean Bolognia. She has devoted herself to many programs which will continue to grow and be expanded over the next years: community service, outreach to international members, and further development of our mentorship grant programs, just to name a few.
Our Mentorship Committee chair, Dr. Marianne O’Donoghue, announced that this year there are 38 recipients of grants throughout the U.S. Mentorship is the precious core of our WDS future, and we have expanded our mission through new grant programs to include medical students, international members, women returning to the workforce, and junior faculty. We appreciate the pharmaceutical industry support of these important programs.
Dr. Suzanne Connolly, leader of the Service Committee announced four new sites this coming year for our Families Play Safe in the Sun campaign: Denver, Chicago, St. Louis, Los Angeles, and Austin. Planning is underway to select the cities we’ll visit in 2007, so I encourage you to contact Suzanne if you have a suggestion.
Thanks to all who gave generously at the luncheon to the Safe Harbor Project in Louisiana which helps needy families escape domestic violence. This organization lost their roof in Hurricane Katrina, and I know the more than $1322 we raised at our luncheon, along with the $3,000 provided by the WDS Board, is very much appreciated.
A special thanks goes to Dr. Seth Matarasso who hosted a Practice Enhancement Reception in his lovely San Francisco office. Seth graciously opened his doors to 200 members to show how he has developed his outstanding dermasurgical practice.
As always, our WDS staff did an outstanding job in coordinating the luncheon, unending committee meetings, and other events in San Francisco. Kerry Parker and her wonderful group have so much dedication and energy.
This is an exhilarating time for WDS, and I urge you to become a part of it. Participate in a mentorship, invite someone to become a member, volunteer at a Families Play Safe in the Sun event or extend a helping hand at a networking session. If you have enjoyed being a member in the past, I encourage you to become more involved this year. Let’s celebrate WDS successes together!
