hat foresight! Although this statement was made in the last century by the successful American industrialist Henry Ford, these words sum up the history of the Women’s Dermatologic Society so very well! Through the diligent work of our 27 committees, many ideas have bloomed into successful projects.

Our logo has expanded to reflect our many functions: “Women’s Dermatologic Society: Physicians Mentors Leaders”

The recent annual luncheon reflected all of the energy that is the root of our growth. Special thanks to our annual luncheon committee co-chaired by Dr. Lisa Garner and Sherry Novick and grateful thanks to Sherry’s mother, Mrs. Beth Novick, party planner extraordinaire. It is hard to imagine in the midst of our luncheon room palpably abuzz with conversation that actually 93% of us are shy! But the guest speaker Susan RoAne provided further tips on successful social interactions. Having a brief self-introduction, acting like a host with the focus on the other, and being a good listener are tips that can serve all of us well regardless of the social situation.

Outgoing President Dr Mary Lupo presided over this busy meeting with high energy. Special recognition was given to Dr Janet Hickman, recipient of the Rose Hirschler award; to Dr Susan Weinkle, recipient of a Presidential citation; and to Dr. Jean Bolognia, recipient of the Mentor of the Year award. Thirty-four residents received mentorship awards and six women dermatologists from other countries received support to attend this annual American Academy of Dermatology meeting thanks to the international travel award.

Participation is the heart of the WDS. And since 2004,volunteerism has become an important focus. Our successful community outreach programs have educated, empowered and encouraged the public to practice good sun safety. Over 200,000,000 media impressions have been made! A generous grant from L'Oréal to the Women’s Dermatologic Society Foundation over the next three years announced at the luncheon meeting ensures continuation of the Play Safe in the Sun program and will target women participating in golf and tennis.

The successful Families Play Safe in the Sun program made possible by a generous grant from 3M Foundation nearly three years ago has visited 14 cities. One event remains of the 15 planned. To make participation by any of our members a possibility, we propose Families Play Safe in the Sun Coast-to-Coast and we welcome global participation, too. For the last event of this program, we invite you to engage in a community educational activity. Target a group in your community: Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, civic service group, parent-teacher organization, sport team or even non-dermatology specialists. We will provide the resources. Stay tuned: you will receive more information on how YOU can participate! (Sign-Up Here)

The GOAL is an activity in each state. Could we make it on every continent too? I guarantee that this is an addictive activity!

It is a privilege and an honor to serve as your President. So many opportunities are ahead!
